The Singapore circuit is an established F1 Grand Prix venue, a pure street circuit that offers a very interesting spectacle every year.
Although the history of the Singapore Grand Prix dates back to the 1960s, the first F1 race was held here in 2008.
Fernando Alonso won the race then, and it was a very controversial victory. The reason? The Spaniard's victory was aided at the time by a deliberate accident involving his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. after which he drove a Safety Car onto the track, which in terms of timing played into the hands of Alonso and his strategy.
The track itself, whose official name is the Marina Bay Street Circuit, is 5.063 km long and presents a number of challenges to the drivers. The walls are very close everywhere, so there is no room for error. Due to the humidity and high temperatures, and the fact that riders don't get much opportunity to rest on the track, this circuit is one of the most physically demanding. In addition, due to the relatively slow average speed, races here take a long time and not infrequently hit the 2-hour time limit.
